condensed from Wikipedia: Our Lady of Victory Church (Inuvik) – WikipediaIt was designed and built by Brother Maurice Laroque, who without architectural training had been doing missionary work in the territory for 30 years and had done construction work there, understanding permafrost behaviour. It is the only building in Inuvik not built on pilings, but on a bowl of concrete above a thick layer of gravel. This would prevent the building’s heat from affecting the permafrost and avoiding heaving.
